The Omega Carter G. Woodson Academy
February 23, 2019 - March 30, 2019
The Carter G. Woodson Academy is an academic enrichment experience offering students and parents an opportunity to engage a culturally relevant curriculum rooted in Black Wall Street.
The graduate chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., in partnership with the Center for Urban Education and the Iota Phi Foundation, presents the Dr. Carter G. Woodson Academy. The academy is designed to be a culturally relevant experience that offers parents and children and opportunity to see themselves through the lenses of a more accurate and more holistic depiction of history, particularly one that includes the contributions of members of the African Diaspora. The academy is a 6-week experience that begins with an opening orientation and classroom exercises. The academy is intentionally crafted to initiate conversations between the generations, challenging what the other knows about themselves and learning a new way of seeing themselves. Each week, three (3) classes will be offered in history, art, and the communicative arts. Classes will be taught by well-skilled teachers from various local schools and universities. Parents are invited to serve as classroom participants, ranging from classroom support to co-instructors to students. The academy will begin with an orientation and conclude with a closing ceremony and recognition experience.
