S.T.E.A.M. Studio

In partnership with Pitt Information Technology, the School of Computing and Information, the Swanson School of Engineering, Pitt Bio Outreach and several student organizations, and with support from Neighborhood Allies Digital Inclusion program, the S.T.E.A.M. offers programs across the lifespan, including Information Technology 101 for high schoolers, adult programming, grant writing and some community courses through Pitt.

All are designed to address needs expressed by Hill District community members related to digital literacy and navigating information and communication technologies.

The S.T.E.A.M Studio features a variety of robust programming that introduces participants to concepts of S.T.E.A.M. Traditionally the acronym has stood for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. At the CEC in the Hill District, this acronym is expounded upon to include an array of subjects such as Entrepreneur, Media, Architecture, and more. Some of the programs that in our S.T.E.A.M education and programming may include are:

  • Swanson School of Engineering: BioBots
  • Girls Who Code
  • Lego Gadgets
  • Video Game Design

Digital Literacy

The CEC in the Hill District provides programming that aims to build digital literacy within the Hill District community. These programs are designed to build skills that will allow participants to effectively communicate and navigate through a variety of digital formats.

Adult Coding

Adult Coding is an eight-week long course led by Pitt’s student group, the Rehab Neural Engineering Labs designed to introduce basic computer programming concepts and their applications in the real world.
