Kelly Protho

Director, Community Engagement Center in the Hill District

Kelly Protho currently serves as the Director for Pitt’s Community Engagement Center in the Hill District, leading the university’s commitment to the neighborhood. She collaborates closely with residents, stakeholders and the University’s faculty and staff to ensure a mutually beneficial experience for all involved.

Previously, Kelly held the position of Senior Applied Learning and Development Specialist at the Allegheny County Department of Human Services, where she led the DHS Trauma Think Tank. This initiative fostered a collaborative approach to addressing trauma with sessions covering topics such as racialized trauma and healing-centered engagement. Additionally, Kelly facilitated training throughout DHS, including, “Shifting the Lens: Practical Applications of Trauma-Informed Care” and GARE’s Advancing Racial Equity.

With over 20 years of experience, Kelly began her career with a focus on family support, advocacy, and education.  As the former Family Engagement Supervisor with Macedonia Family and Community Enrichment Center Inc., Kelly concentrated on implementing trauma-informed practices within underserved communities, leading a dedicated team to building rapport and addressing family needs.

As a former resident of the Hill District, Kelly served on the Advisory Council of the Community Engagement Center, and the Hill Community Development Cooperation’s Development Review Panel. Furthermore, she remains engaged with community services initiatives serving as an active member of MAD DADS of Greater Pittsburgh’s MOMS Division, where she supports youth engagement.
